Tonight begins the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Things have been very busy and I have not had much time to check things out, but I thought I would update the standings from after the round of 32.

1 Frank Sansone       184
2 Andy Efting       178
3 Don Johnson       165
4 Andy Rupert       161
5 Matt Jury               155
6 Josiah Sansone       137
7 Sarah Nething         90

While I have the lead (which is actually pretty unusual for A Thinking Man's Tourney Time), I believe I am the only one who has had his eventual champion already eliminated, so unless Kentucky, UNC, and Kansas take a fairly quick exit, I don't think my lead will hold.

The only thing that really matters is finishing ahead of your son. Must uphold appearances. :)

Who is Frank Republican?

Jon,

Yes - that is especially true now that beating him in a real game of basketball has become an exceedingly rare feat for me.

Andy,

Every year I typically do a few "what if" type of brackets - such as Upsets Only or Favorites Only this year. Frank Republican was a name I used one year when I made picks based on the team that came from the most Republican of areas - e.g. Texas beats Mass. However, I have also usually entered into our bracket challenge the picks of the POTUS - which is what I used the "Frank Republican" alias for this year (kind of ironic). Generally speaking, he has not performed well in our bracket challenge (coming in last or close to last the other years). This year, however, he is doing well (I believe he would be winning the last time I looked). He may be preparing for a gig as a basketball analyst after his current one is up. :)

I won't mind Frank Republican winning this contest if he loses the one that really counts!

Andy,

If letting him win this contest was all it took to guarantee his loss in the more important contest, I would change all of our picks to assure he won this contest.

A friend shared Psalm 109:8 in this regard.
