Who said this? - BG edition

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

I found this quote in my reading recently and thought it would be an interesting "Who Said This?" for the blog. (If anyone is actually reading anymore.)

Billy Graham ... is the Roman Catholic church's best ally, since he welcomed them as evangelicals at his services. Graham is Jehoshophat with Ahab.

Update:

1. I fixed the title, I actually had accidently titled this post with the title for the follow-up post, so I shortened this one back to an accurate title.

2. I have provided two hints in the comment sections, so far.
1. Don Johnson is correct in that he had read this somewhere else recently (I know, not much of a hint)
2. The person who made this statement is dead.

3. I will add a new hint.
Although the person who made this statement is dead, the statement was only published in 2008.

Iain Murray?

Sounds like my uncle, Jake Johnson, for one. But I think I read it somewhere else recently also, can't remember who.

I tried to respond this morning, but Blogger wouldn't let me.

I should clarify that the nature of this quote is such that similar things may have been said by others.

In light of that, Jason's guess of Iain Murray is probably a pretty good guess.

For that matter, Uncle Jake may be a good guess, too, but he is not the one from whom I pulled the quote.

Don, I believe you are right in having read this somewhere else recently. (That is a hint.)

My first guess would be Ian Paisley.

Hey, Pastor Wagner, good to see you here.

We are sure going to miss your mom when she moves down there to SC.

Ian Paisly is a good guess - and I would guess that he has at least said something similar.

Here is a hint for everyone: This particular quote comes from someone who is already dead.

My second guess would be Dr. Bob Jones JR.

Well, the reason I guessed my uncle is because he wrote a little book (a copy of which I once saw in the BJU library) entitled, "Billy Graham, the Jehoshaphat of this Generation".

But my uncle is not dead yet. He is ailing, and very frail, but that is a matter of prayer right now.

My uncle, BTW, was a missionary in India for 12 years and started the Bible College that Jacob Chelli presided over (my uncle discipled Chelli). As recently as last summer, my uncle was trying to find a way to go to Pakistan for more mission work, teaching in a college.

I'm a little partial to him.

So... back to the quote at hand...

Lloyd-Jones? Maybe a little too strong for him.

Pastor Wagner,

Dr. Bob, Jr. is a very good guess, in fact, he did say the following, which at least along the same lines:

"For a long time I believed that Billy was doing more harm than any other living man. What a tragedy to see him building the church of Antichrist, masking the wickedness of popery, and providing a sheep's cloak of Christian recognition for the wolves of apostasy."

Pastor Johnson,

That is pretty interesting about your uncle. I did not realize this, as I had never heard of him. Of course (and this is another hint), I never heard of the source of this quote until about a year ago and only read the quote for the first time about a month or so ago.

I believe you are correct on this being a little too strong for Lloyd-Jones.

I will reveal the answer later today - when I finish writing the accompanying post. I get to go preach in Chapel at Faith Baptist School in a little bit, so I need to get off of here and finish getting ready.

Since it would hardly be interesting if it was a Fundamentalist who said it, I'm going to guess someone closer to Graham, maybe J.M. Boice (although the phrasing seems too blunt for Boice), or Francis Schaeffer, but I'm really just grasping at straws. I don't know.

Whoever it was, he understood the issue that Mark Dever couldn't during his interview with Dr. Minnick.
